The Impossible (Spanish: Lo imposible) is a 2012 English-language Spanish disaster drama film directed by Juan Antonio Bayona.

It was written by Sergio G. Sánchez, stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and tells the true story of a Spanish (though their nationalities are specified as British in the film) family's experience of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
The film tells the true story of Maria and Henry Belon, played by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor, and their three children. It starts as the family begins their Christmas vacation in Thailand, with the intention of spending a few days at a tropical paradise resort. Their idyllic vacation is interrupted on the morning of December 26, 2004, when a devastating tsunami destroys the coastal zone. In surviving the disaster, the family is separated and a desperate search to reunite ensues.
The film was a co-production of Spanish film companies Apaches Entertainment and Telecinco Cinema, and employed much of the same crew from The Orphanage, including the director, writer, production manager, cinematographer, composer, and editor. Principal photography began August 23, 2010 in Alicante, Spain, and continued in October in Thailand.
Director Juan Antonio Bayona decided not to specify the nationalities of the main characters in order to create a universal film in which nationalities were irrelevant to the plot.
The film marks the second collaboration between Watts and McGregor after appearing together in the 2005 film Stay.
Warner Bros. released the film in Spain on October 11, 2012. The United States distribution rights were pre-bought by Summit Entertainment. A teaser trailer was released on December 26, 2011. After a full-length English-language trailer was released on August 20, 2012 a United States release date was confirmed by Summit of December 21, 2012.
