Killing Them Softly is an American crime film directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt, based on the 1974 novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins.

Adapted from George V. Higgins' novel and set in New Orleans, Killing Them Softly follows professional enforcer Jackie Cogan (Pitt), who investigates a heist that occurs during a high stakes, mob-protected poker game. The film also features Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), Ray Liotta (GoodFellas), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), with James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola, Max Casella, and Sam Shepard, among others.

Killing Them Softly is based on the 1974 novel Cogan's Trade by George V. Higgins. The film is written and directed by Andrew Dominik. The project was first announced in November 2010 when Brad Pitt was reported to be in talks for the lead role. Pitt joined the project the following month, and production was scheduled to begin in Louisiana in March 2011. Additional roles were cast in early 2011. Andrew Dominic told he asked Pitt if he was interested in the role via a text message; he replied "yes" and the matter was settled over half an hour.
Pre-production began in Louisiana in January 2011, and filming was underway by March 2011.
According to Dillahunt, the film's first cut was 2.5 hours long.
The first theatrical trailer for Killing Them Softly was released on August 1, 2012 and was met with positive feedback.
Killing Them Softly is scheduled to be released October 19, 2012. The Weinstein Company will distribute the film in the United States and Canada.
As of August 13, 2012, Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 88% based on reviews from 17 critics, and reports a rating average of 7.7 out of 10.
