This utility is used to calculate permissions for files used on UNIX servers. Normally, it is used in conjunction with an FTP operation.CHMOD refers to the actual setting of the access permissions for a file. The two most common settings are 755 and 777. CHMOD 755 is a read and execute permission. Owner, Group, and Other. Each column should have 3 check boxes below them, one each for read, write, and execute. In the first column, the owner, check all three boxes; that will yield a 7. In the second column, the group, click the first and third boxes, read and execute. Finally, the last column, the other, the first and third boxes should be checked. CHMOD 777 is a do everything permission. All three boxes in each of the three columns should be checked. The chmod command accepts up to four digits to represent an octal number. The octets refer to bits applied to the file owner, group and other users, respectively. Use of three digits is discouraged because it leaves the fourth as the default and this value is not fixed. The least significant digit sets/resets an additional mode for each of these three sets of bits. Experienced Unix and Linux users tend to recommend that the user of this command check the man page (man chmod) on the system of interest.
Particular care should be taken when a directory is the target because the effect is not intuitive. In addition, it will not work on all file types. For example, it has no effect on a symbolic link. The read, write and execute permissions apply slightly differently to directories than they do to files. The read permission on a directory controls the ability to list the contents of that directory. In this example we?ll create a directory and place a blank file in it. We?ll then modify the permissions on the directory so the owner cannot see the contents. Typing ls -ld at the host system prompt will show you the permissions of your home directory, with a string of 10 characters that should look something like drwx---
