In order to understand what high blood pressure is, first you must understand what is meant by blood pressure. This is the measurement of the force with which the blood pushes against artery walls as the blood is pumped by the heart.

When we say high blood pressure this means the numbers which are measured by systolic, which is the measurement of the pressure that is created when blood is being pumped while the heart is beating. The diastolic is the measurement of the pressure in between beats of the heart.

The normal rate for blood pressure is less than 120 for the systolic number and less than 80 for the diastolic number. They are often written down with the systolic number over the diastolic number such as, 120/80. The hard facts are in the U.S. one in three people have high blood pressure.
